Famotidine Side Effects

Famoditine is a type of oral drug which prohibits acid production in the stomach. It is categorized in the drug class of histamine-2 (H2) blockers which also include nizatidine (Axid), cimetidine (Tagamet), and ranitidine (Zantac). Histamine is a natural enzyme which stimulates the parietal cells in the stomach to produce acid. Histamine-2 blockers block the activity of the chemical histamine on the parietal cells, which in turn reduce acid production. Excess amounts of acid in the stomach can harm the lining of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. This leads to damage and ulcer formation. Histamine-2 blockers reduce stomach acid production, thus preventing and healing inflammation and ulcers caused by the excess stomach acid. Famotidine is often prescribed to taken in association with NSAIDs. Just like any other medicine, famotididne may also cause side effects and these famotidine side effects can also take their toll on the health of an individual.

However, the good news is that not everyone taking this medicine experiences the adverse effects. It is a fact that majority of the users have a good tolerance for famotidine. In most of the cases, famotidine side effects are very minor which means that they do not require treatment. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved famotidine in November 1986.

The use of famotidine has long been studied meticulously in clinical trials. In these trials, the famotidine side effects occurring in a number of people using the drug are being recorded and documented. Based on these tests, the most common adverse effects of famotidine are: Dizziness in up to 1.3 percent of the group, headaches in up to 4.7 percent of the group, constipation in up to 1.2 percent of the study group and diarrhea in up to 1.7 percent of the study group.

In addition, the use of famotidine in treating infants below one year old who suffer from GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease was also conducted. It was found out that in approximately five out of thirty-five infants (approximately 14 percent) who were treated with the drug, the symptom of agitation was present.
